‘Jersey Metal: A History of the Garden State’s Heavy Metal Scene’ by Frank White and Alan Tecchio

Jersey Metal: A History of the Garden State’s Heavy Metal Scene Volume #1 1969-1986

(WT Publishing)

This monster of a book should keep metalheads of any state highly engrossed and entertained for hours on end. Between longtime photog White’s illuminating shots and the prose of both authors, its 344 full-color 8-by-11-inch oversized pages, on good glossy-sturdy paper, makes for a welcome addition to any coffee table. First out in 2022, this revised edition is but the first of three. Tecchio—a metal singer with Hades, Non-Fiction and about six other bands since the early ‘80s—can also write. As can White. And they do it right.

Personal anecdotes, stories of the access-to-shoot or lack thereof, the attention-to-detail, voluminous research, fascinating tales of superstar bands in their infancy (like Metallica, who first gained a foothold to stardom in New Jersey), Jersey Metal is, indeed, a treasure trove of info with enough stats, lists, reactions and provocations to engender debate whenever and wherever those who headbang hang.
