Let the debate begin…
Woody Guthrie [1912-1967] lived the last few years of his life in New Jersey suffering from Huntington's Disease. He wrote "This Land Is Your Land" (our new #1) in 1940 as a response to Irving Berlin's tepid "God Bless America." There are those who feel this song should be America's National Anthem. Peter Paul & Mary, Bing Crosby, Connie Francis, The Seekers, Tennessee Ernie Ford, David Carradine, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Raffi are but a few of the artists who have covered Guthrie's most famous song. Bob Dylan idolized Guthrie, wanted to be him, and visited him in Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morris County on numerous occasions, bringing his guitar and playing for him "Song To Woody," a song Dylan wrote for his 1962 self-titled debut album. There's a scene in A Complete Unknown with Dylan in that hospital room with him.
