For their 40th Anniversary “Time Flies” Tour, extraordinary drummer/producer/composer Steve Smith, amazing keyboardist Manuel Valera and incredible bassist Janek Gwizdala will prove they’re even better than these superlatives. Although Time Flies doesn’t come out until May 5 on Wounded Bird Records, complete with a bonus CD, A Prayer For The Generations featuring tenor saxophonist George Garzone and vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, the former Journey drummer has musically left his old band in the dust. Smith is influenced by the legendary Tony Williams and his intricate fills, boundary-pushes and daring is, in a live context, thrilling. Wanna see three cats whose jazz-rock fusion chops can’t be matched? They’re gonna raise the roof in Newton.
