Bruce Back on the Cover of Time Magazine
In October of 1975, Bruce Springsteen became the first rock star in history to simultaneously land on the covers of Time and Newsweek magazines. After disappointing sales of his first two albums, Born To Run had shot to #3. Bruce had arrived. Fifty years later, he’s back on the cover of the current Time. In the original Time cover story, reporter Jay Cocks, in introducing him to America, wrote “his music is primal. Directly in touch with all the impulses of wild humor and glancing melancholy, street tragedy and punk anarchy that have made rock the distinctive voice of a generation…everybody is going to know where he’s come from and just where he’s heading.”
Bruce acknowledged the acclaim when he played Michigan State University on April 4, 1976, by changing the lyrics to “Rosalita” when he sang, “tell him it’s his last chance, Rosie/Tell him I ain’t no freak/’Cause I got my picture/On the cover of Time and Newsweek.”
In the new Time piece, by Eric Cortellessa, Bruce confirms he will, indeed, tour again with The E Street Band (“I just want to keep going. I want to make records that deal with subjects people haven’t heard me deal with yet.”) He also confirmed that there will be a Tracks 3 boxed set. And, of course, he gets political (“If I’m going to stay true to who I’ve tried to be, I can’t give these guys a free pass.”)
