Labyrinth Books in Princeton Hosts ‘She’s A Badass’ Author

Labyrinth Bookstore Event

On March 5, Labyrinth Books in Princeton will host a book signing by Kat Taylor whose very cool book—She’s A Badass: Women In Rock Shaping Feminism—came out last month on Backbeat Books. Each of its 20 chapters focuses in on interviews with female musicians: Suzi Quatro, Ann Wilson (Heart), Exene Cervenka (X), Gina Schock (The Go-Go’s), Lydia Lunch, Suzanne Vega, Cherie Currie (The Runaways), Joan Osborne, Donita Sparks (L7), Amy Ray (Indigo Girls), Paula Cole and others.

“Though they sometimes used their music to express frustration at the rampant chauvinism they encountered,” says Michelle Gutenstein of Mad Ink PR, “these artists were most effective in paving the way for others simply by being true to themselves as strong, independent women. In becoming role models, they had an immense impact on the way the music business works—and, arguably, on society overall.”

One of the interviewees, Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill, makes a good point in her chapter:  “If you look at history, you can see that progress is not linear; it goes back and forth. You never know when it’s going to go backwards, so you always have to be fighting. You have to be aware that rights we do have were achieved through political struggle. You can’t take them for granted.”

Longtime music journalist Tom Beaujour will moderate the proceedings.
