Princeton Jazz Fest Returns April 13

On Saturday, April 13, on the Princeton University campus within Alexander Hall’s Richardson Auditorium, for nine straight hours starting at 1:00 p.m. (the first five hours are FREE), the Princeton University Music Department will present its “Jazz At Princeton” festival. The event will be live-streamed here.

Clarinetist Darryl Harper will perform from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. followed by trumpeter Josh Lawrence from 2:15 to 3:15 and vibraphonist Yuhan Su from 3:30 to 4:30. The free portion of the festival will conclude with the Princeton University Faculty Quintet from 4:45 to 5:45.

Tickets for the 8:00 show—as presented by the “Program in Latin American Studies”—will feature The Creative Large Ensemble, directed by Darcy James Argue, starring the world-renowned Cuban-American drummer/composer/educator Dafnis Prieto, in his prime at 49. Tickets and further information here.

Princeton’s Director of Jazz is Rudresh Mahanthappa, one of the greatest alto sax men on the planet. His 2015 Bird Calls and his 2020 Hero Trio were two of the finest jazz albums of those years. He’s been named “Alto Saxophonist of the Year” by jazz bible downbeat magazine for nine of the last 11 years. Born in Italy to Indian emigres, raised in Colorado, he settled in Chicago before making his name in New York City.
