Scott Kettner To Host Album Party June 15 at Joe’s Pub

Scott Kettner by Carolina Mama

Maplewood drummer-composer-educator Scott Kettner is all over the map. Literally. He may be from Essex County but within the quasi-brilliance of his Nation Beat band, and their new album Archaic Humans, the ear gravitates towards both Louisiana and Brazil. Recorded in New York last year with a delicious vocals-beatbox- congas-drums-sax-trumpet-trombone-tuba lineup, it resonates with a salsa vibe due to Kettner’s Brazilian travels. Now add bebop to the mix. And don’t forget to do a second-line with an umbrella in your hand down Rampart Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He’ll be celebrating its release at a Joe’s Pub party June 15 in New York City.

“It’s the spirit of the music,” he says. “It’s uplifting! This is music that makes people smile and dance and laugh, and it’s bringing people together. In the globalized music industry, we aim to reach into roots-based traditions and bring those voices to the surface by creating new music that impacts the people around us, recognizing and assuring that our similarities are stronger than our differences.

“The vision was to create an album of all originals,” he continues, “to put our fingerprint on this thread that we’ve been following. One of the things I’ve always been trying to do in all Nation Beat albums is bridge the gap between the folkloric and the modern, connecting the past with the present while thinking about the future.”
