Mike Daly can write. Plus, he’s got the kind of voice Elvis Costello strives for. He always did. From bands Every Damn Day to Mike Daly & The Planets, to his longtime Aquarian Weekly Editorship, he has maintained a level of musical and journalistic excellence. Lately, the 64-year old has been plowing through the detritus of his career, songs that are simply too damn good not be heard again. The latest discovery is “Wishing Hoping Wanting.”

Originally recorded at a plethora of New Jersey, Maryland and Alabama locations, including a vacant office building, Daly’s Paterson abode, Nu Bleu Studio in Garfield, guitarist Scott Van Sickle’s attic, the producer’s basement, pianist Ray Nissen’s home studio, string arranger Chris Opperman’s home studio, with cover art by Alicia Daly, Early Miscellaneous, by Mike Daly’s Lost N’ Found, is an 11-song treasure with Daly on vocals, bass and guitar, the producer on keyboards, bass and conga, Reynolds on lead guitar, drummers Dave Enyart/Rich Stout, Jim Smith on tympani and guitarist Chuck Daly.

Longtime leader of The J. Howard Duff Band out of Union County, Duff moved down south and the vocal on his latest single sounds like it. Bruce Gladstone’s new album, Journey 2, is his most satisfying work yet.
