The Feelies ‘Rewind’ a Covers Collection

The Feelies by Doug Seymour

The Feelies by Doug Seymour

Passaic County pioneers The Feelies will release their eighth album June 20, a collection of covers from throughout their career, a career that started in 1976, ended in 1992, and started up again 16 years later in 2008. Rewind (Bar/None Records) will be available on digital download, streaming services, blue vinyl and CD via mail order only. The first single will be “Dancing Barefoot/Barstool Blues.” Hear it below. (They had always wanted to cover the Patti Smith Group’s 1979 “Dancing Barefoot.”) The tune’s overdubs were recorded in Jersey City while Sauter’s vocals were laid down at Mix-O-Lydian Studios in Morris County. Central to the Feelies overall oddball oeuvre, they mix’n’matched it up with Neil Young’s 1975 “Barstool Blues.” (They also do Young’s 1979 “Sedan Delivery.”)

The eight songs feature the classic Feelies lineup of singer-guitarist Glenn Mercer, lead guitarist Bill Million, bassist Brenda Sauter (who sings the Smith song) and drummer Stan Demeski. They also do two Beatle classics:  “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey” with drummer Anton Fier [1956-2022] and “She Said She Said.” Dylan’s “Seven Days” was originally recorded by Ronnie Wood. “Take It As It Comes” is the 1967 Doors song. They go back even further for the 1966 Rolling Stones gem, “Paint It Black.” “I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms” is probably the rarest song. It’s from 1976 and it’s by Boston band Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers.
