Steve Conte, from Matawan in Monmouth County, played in the New York Dolls and with Finnish rocker Michael Monroe. He wrote this one 39 years ago and recently re-discovered it.

“Brian Jones”

Filmed at Asbury Park’s historic Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel (once owned by Johnny Cash), released by JEM Recordings out of South Plainfield, The Weeklings’ homage to tragic Brit bluesman Brian Jones features a Jones-styled harmonica riff as filmed, written and directed by Cecil B DeWeekling (otherwise known as Mark Laidlaw).

 

Katie Henry
“The House is Rockin’”

This Stevie Ray Vaughan 1989 barnburner has been covered a few times—most notably by Wynonna Judd—but Katie Henry wrestles with it like a true pro. Coming out of bucolic Vernon in Sussex County, Henry scored with “On My Way” (to be used in the upcoming The Jersey Sound documentary) but here she really lets loose…and with her house rockin’, we won’t bother knockin’!

Bettye LaVette
“One More Song”

Bettye LaVette came out of Detroit but has lived here in Essex County for decades. Sharon Robinson’s “One More Song” was never performed like this!

 

Allen Ginsberg
“The End”

The legendary poet Allen Ginsberg, from Paterson, may have died in 1997, but he’s alive again on the re-release of his 1989 The Lion For Real, now called The Lion For Real Re-Born from Shimmy Disc/Joyful Noise Records.

Mike Greenblatt

MIKE GREENBLATT has been writing for Goldmine magazine and New Jersey's Aquarian Weekly for more than 35 years. His writing subjects fill the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He's interviewed Joe Cocker, Graham Nash, David Crosby, Carlos Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash, and members of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. He was 18 when he attended Woodstock in 1969.

In addition to writing about music, Greenblatt has worked on publicity campaigns for The Animals, Pat Benatar, Johnny Winter, Tommy James and Richard Branson, among others. He is currently the editor of The Jersey Sound.
