Pianist Aaron Diehl’s national tour will land him downtown Newark at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center for two nights in October with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra playing selections from his brand new Zodiac Suite (Mack Avenue Records) in tribute to pioneering pianist-composer Mary Lou Williams [1910-1981].
Diehl, mentored by Wynton Marsalis early on, has been influenced by the Zodiac Suite his whole life. Written and recorded by Mary Lou Williams in 1945 (40 years before Diehl was born), she only performed it but a few times with varying degrees of success. “I can only do my small part to celebrate [her] music whenever possible because she was such a brilliant artist,” says Diehl. “It’s important to keep advocating on behalf of these folks who are no longer with us and to keep their music in people’s ears for generations to come.”
