A New Podcast Worth Hearing

Ben Vaughn

Perhaps because he’s new to podcasting, composer-performer-producer Ben Vaughn, born in Camden County 71 years ago, should bring a new perspective to his “Straight From The Hat” podcast. He’s been a radio host but now, every other Thursday night, he’ll delve into his own personal history by having his co-host, Laura Pochodylo, reach into a big hat and pull out names. No pre-planning, no rehearsing, each name will be someone or some band that Vaughn has either met, collaborated, partnered and/or jammed with. From blowing blues-harp with Lynyrd Skynyrd to meeting the boys in Long Island heavy metal band Attila (with an unknown Billy Joel), Vaughn’s stories need to be heard.

Since leaving New Jersey for Pennsylvania and then California, he’s met people like Gene Pitney, Duane Eddy, Jonathan Richman, Arthur Alexander, Willie Nelson and Nancy Sinatra. He’s worked with Ween and Los Straitjackets. He composed for television’s That ‘70s Show and Third Rock From The Sun.

“I’m excited about bringing something new to the world of music podcasts,” he says. “Instead of talking about history or opinions on albums, Laura and I wanted to focus on the people I’ve worked with and their stories as humans, not just the music they made.” Each podcast will end with him performing one of his original songs.
