Free Shows at the PNC Bank Arts Center
Free shows are rare. But the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel will be presenting British Invasion act Herman’s Hermits and Tommy Roe on June 8. The Soundtrack of Our Lives with Deborah Rennard and Al Sapienza will open. Legendary disc jockey Cousin Brucie will host.
Hermit’s Hermits hit in 1964 with “I’m Into Something Good” which went #1 in England. Then America fell in love with the band’s cheeky lead singer Peter Noone. Three 1965 American hits followed: “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat” (#2), a cover of the 1957 doo-wop hit “Silhouettes” by The Rays (#5) and the very British “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter” (#1). The string of strong pop songs was ruined by the truly awful “I’m Henry VIII, I Am” (#1) but Noone, 75, proved to be an engaging performer in the following decades.
Atlanta singer-songwriter Tommy Roe, 80, recorded 13 albums with 55 singles from 1960 to 1987 including such #1 chart-toppers as 1962’s “Sheila” and 1969’s “Dizzy.”
The venue’s free “Senior Concert Series” are all afternoon shows at 1:30. May 9 is a Jackie Wilson/Motown/Bobby Rydell tribute starring Jackie Wilson’s son Bobby. May 17 is The Lettermen and comedian John Pizzi. May 23 is “The Sounds of the ‘50s & ‘60s” with Kid Kyle, The Skyliners and The Brooklyn Bridge.
