Have You Heard Monte Yet?

Monte

She’s out of Red Bank—has been writing music since she was 15—and she doesn’t look too pleased to be celebrating her 23rd birthday. After listening to David Bowie in her bedroom for years, she writes of her own life experiences. Now she listens to Missouri singer-songwriter Chapell Roan. “Cowboys” is the song that caught our ear. When asked about it, she says, `Cowboys’ is definitely more country than I usually lean towards in my music, as I’m inspired by [Americana]. I think my writing and lyricism tells those kinds of stories. I mean, I am, after all, a storyteller at heart and just hope people can resonate with my music. The song is about a cowboy so it just made sense that it had some of that country influence in the production. The overall genre of my music, though, is decidedly indie pop for sure.”

We can safely say that “Cowboys” ain’t no country song. We doubt she’ll be singing it onstage at the Grand Ole Opry anytime soon. It has a fuck-you deliciously spicy attitude filled with vitriol. Her new one, “23,” comes out June 2. After a June 8 performance at Montclair’s Silver Stream podcast Studio, Monte will perform June 18 at The Church Of Saint Leo The Great Carnival 2024 in Lincroft, Monmouth County, before singing July 5 at The Asbury Book Cooperative on Cookman Avenue Asbury Park, and July 12 at the 3BR Distillery on Main Street in Keyport. We like to say around here that it’s attitude that sets The Jersey Sound apart and this young lady has it in spades.
