Recorded in Jersey: ‘Hip To The Skip’ by The Christian Fabian Trio (Spicerack Records)

Christian Fabian

Emanating out of Mozart Studio in Little Falls, Passaic County, comes an absolutely delicious platter of sweets buoyed by drummer Jason Marsalis, he of the First Family of New Orleans Jazz.  It’s bassist-composer Christian Fabian’s date yet it’s keyboardist Matt King who gives this party its heft. Highlighted by some discreet picks to interpret, Hip To The Skip is as rhythmic and funky as its title (say it five times fast). As Marsalis says, “this is the first album I’ve ever done where I’m playing in the funk/fusion vein the whole session. This was a lot of fun and listeners will be surprised by the music.”

The Covers:  Louis Armstrong had a hit with the 19th Century spiritual “When The Saints Go Marching In” in 1938. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers first recorded “Moanin’” in 1959.  Cannonball Adderley hit big with “Mercy Mercy Mercy” in 1966, and McCoy Tyner’s 1991 “Effendi” is an illustrious, complex way to close. Bravo!!
