Lisa Fischer Steals The Show Again

Hoboken diva Lisa Fischer always steals the show. She’s been the go-to back-up singer on tours by Sting, Luther Vandross, Tina Turner, Nine Inch Nails and the Rolling Stones. (She stayed with the Stones from 1989 to 2015.) Now she steals it right out from under the sax man Javon Jackson on his new Jackson Plays Dylan album when she sings “Gotta Serve Somebody” like nobody has ever sung it before (hint:  she’s got a little Mavis Staples in her for this one!)

She was one of the subjects of the 2013 documentary 20 Feet From Stardom. She won a Grammy Award for her 1991 #1 “How Can I Ease The Pain.” Her solo career has had her cross-crossing the globe in her band Grand Baton. She collaborated with composer-arranger-pianist JC Maillard and choreographer Alonzo King to create 2015’s The Propelled Heart for the LINES Ballet, performing it in California and Hong Kong. Grammy nominations seem to follow her whatever she does:  be it with Louie Vega, Gregory Porter or Yo Yo Ma. HBO used her voice in its Notes From The Field film.

Ms. Lisa Fischer and Grand Baton will be performing May 1 and 2 in Baltimore at the Keystone Korner and May 3 in Alexandria Virginia at Birchmere.
