Historical Background

Tony Mart’s in Somers Point was a bayside club that ran from 1945 to 1982. The club hosted a wide variety of stars like Bill Haley & His Comets, Conway Twitty, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Joey Dee & The Starliters, Dwayne Eddie, Del Shannon, Tony Orlando & Dawn and hundreds of others including an unknown band called Levon & The Hawks who went on to become The Band when Bob Dylan called Tony Mart’s to ask if they could be his back-up band. So even The Band, long associated with Woodstock, New York, got their start in New Jersey! Check the picture and see if you can even recognize Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Rick Danko.
