New Jersey Performing Arts Center Announces Classical Fall Season

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark has announced its fall season of classical concerts. Located at One Center Street, with ticket prices no higher than $49 to $149, the sound is exquisite, the venue gorgeous and the parking is ample.

Soprano Renee Fleming (pictured) kicks it off October 6 with Xian Zhang conducting the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in a 3:00 p.m. show called “Voice Of Nature.” It’s a multi-media extravaganza encompassing the Romantic and Contemporary eras, using nature as both inspiration and victim of humanity. A film by the National Geographic Society will accompany the onstage performers.

On November 15 at 7:30 p.m., Sandbox Percussion will join the Tyshawn Sorey Trio to celebrate the Centennial of pioneering drummer Max Roach’s birth. Sorey, 43, the multi-instrumentalist Pulitzer Prize winning composer, graduated from Arts High School in Newark, and even participated in NJPAC’s “Jazz For Teens.” He’s now come full-circle to debut here as headliner. A new classical-jazz synthesis will be unveiled in tribute to Max Roach’s groundbreaking M’Boom ensemble.

On November 23 at 8:00, the esoteric, adventurous, genre-defying Kronos Quartet from Seattle, who has been delighting, confounding and mystifying audiences for 51 years, will perform a set in honor of the legendary civil rights icon/gospel singer Mahalia Jackson [1911-1972].
