Newark Pride Week

The 18th Annual Newark LGBTQ—Lesbian Gay Bi Trans Queer—Pride Festival will take place next month at a variety of downtown locations. The music will be loud. The feeling will be proud. Starting on July 10 with a 2:00 Drag Brunch at The Launch Pad on Broad Street and a 4:00 Pride Kick-Off Party at Ric’s Place on Branford Avenue, the Progressive Pride Flag Raising Ceremony will be the next day, July 11, at 6:00 inside the Newark City Hall Rotunda. This year’s theme is “Legacy of Liberation.” Nico Kitchen+Bar, on Center Street, will host a reception after the flag-raising at 7:00, and at 9:30 the Robert Treat Hotel on Park Place will host “The Happiest Hour.” Amongst the July 12 events will be “Talent Tuesday” at Bar Vanquish on Market Street at 5:00 and “Spicy Tuesday” at 9:00 in Rosie Sports Bar on Astor Street.

July 13: films, music, a “Queer Newark Walking Tour,” a Drag Story Hour and Game Night at the Newark Library, a “Love & Liberation Singles Mixer” and karaoke.

July 14: a “Pretty In Pink” wine tasting at 7:30 in the Divino Tasting Room on Maiden Lane as well as a bag drive for LGBTQ homeless hosted by Pop Up Print Shop on Halsey Street.

July 15: “Pride Punch-A-Thon,” “Project Wow Fun Fest,” “Beauty & Wellness Happy Hour,” “In Living Color LGBTQ Pride Art Show,” a comedy show and a carnival.

July 16: Yoga, a block party, another happy hour, a “House Music Bar Crawl,” “Newark Pride Alliance Circle Of Friends Awards,” and “Latin Fever” at the Robert Treat Hotel.

On July 17, A march is planned from Lincoln Park to NJPAC at 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., culminating in the Chambers Plaza festival.

MIKE GREENBLATT has been writing for Goldmine magazine and New Jersey's Aquarian Weekly for more than 35 years. His writing subjects fill the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He's interviewed Joe Cocker, Graham Nash, David Crosby, Carlos Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash, and members of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. He was 18 when he attended Woodstock in 1969.

In addition to writing about music, Greenblatt has worked on publicity campaigns for The Animals, Pat Benatar, Johnny Winter, Tommy James and Richard Branson, among others. He is currently the editor of The Jersey Sound.
