Paper Mill Playhouse Announces Summer Cabaret Lineup

The Paper Mill Playhouse has announced its 2023 summer cabaret lineup, outside at its Brookside Cabaret, where Broadway regulars, Manhattan cabaret stars and veterans of Paper Mill Playhouse past productions go to do full sets. The shows are on the patio at the F.M. Kirby Carriage House Restaurant Wednesdays through Saturday from July 19 to September 9.

The historic Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn was built in 1795 as a functioning paper mill and destroyed by fire in the 1860s. Built back up, it prospered until the 1890s when it fell into disrepair, an Essex County eyesore. In 1934, the land was bought. It took four years but in 1938, the Paper Mill Playhouse produced its first play, The Kingdom Of God by Martinez Sierra. Then 16 more over the next 24 months. Thriving in the ‘50s and ‘60s hosting major stars in international productions, by the ‘70s, 145 shows had a run. And the room was a national destination.

1n 1980, it burned down again. In 1982, You Can’t Take It With You debuted before going on to The Kennedy Center in DC and Broadway. By the ‘90s, PBS was taping episodes of Great Performances there. Hollywood thespians lined up to sing and dance there. The new millennium has been filled with A-List music, drama and comedy for a small fraction of what it would cost to cross the Hudson and wrestle with midtown to see a Broadway show.
