Stone Temple Pilots Bassist, Robert DeLeo, Covers Canadian Folksinger, Gordon Lightfoot

Robert DeLeo

Stone Temple Pilots bassist/composer/producer Robert DeLeo, 56 (the younger brother of STP guitarist Dean DeLeo), has released two Gordon Lightfoot covers—“Affair On Eighth Avenue” and “Your Love’s Return”—as a bonus to his Lessons Learned solo album from last year. Surprisingly, Canadian folksinger Lightfoot has always been an inspiration to the grunge star.

He explains in a press release:  “Gordon Lightfoot is one of the sculptors of a musical era that I cherish and hold so dear to my heart. I covered these two songs out of respect and relating to Gordon’s willingness to convey his vulnerability in his songs. I decided to leave Gordon’s songs off Lessons Learned so my musical journey and personal experiences would be my own.”

DeLeo displayed his mastery of numerous instruments on the album with the help of guest players and singers. The Lightfoot songs are sung by Pete Shoulder whom DeLeo says, “is one of my favorite singers. His voice captures the same elements that great singers of the past have emotionally stirred up in all of us.” Shoulder is a British singer/songwriter/guitarist. He was in 21 Guns with Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham and wrote “Think Of Me” for blues singer Little Milton.
