Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music Announce Inaugural Gospel Sing-Off

Springsteen Archives

It’s called “Move On Up” and it’s the inaugural “Gospel and Praise Team Sing-Off” celebrating gospel choirs and praise teams, awarding money to the winning ensembles. Church and community choirs and praise teams from Asbury Park and Newark are invited to submit representative music now to a team of judges who will then select six entries to compete for $10,000 (First Prize) and $5,000 (second prize) in a June 8 “Sing-Off” at Monmouth University in West Long Branch. Admission to the June 8 event is free.

Archives Director Eileen Chapman: “We’re excited to kick off this inaugural program devoted to celebrating gospel, one of America’s richest vocal music forms. While largely started in the Black church, gospel music runs deep into the foundation of secular music. Its roots can be heard in R’n’B, soul, rock’n’roll and the blues. Next year we’ll add other cities and the year after that still more so that eventually every gospel choir and praise team in the state will be able to participate.”
