Dylan songs have always been so ripe for reinvention ever since The Byrds took “Mr. Tambourine Man” electric in 1965. Jem Records, the New Jersey label that had previously put out celebrations of John Lennon, Brian Wilson, Pete Townshend, Ray Davies, Jagger/Richards and David Bowie, now has a Dylan Celebration and it’s a Jersey-centric Dylan doozy.

In 1974, Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie had a meeting in Philadelphia where Bowie was recording his ninth album, Young Americans. Bowie wound up covering two Bruce songs in the studio—“It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City” and “Growin’ Up”—but both were given up on. Now it’s time for New Jersey to cover some Bowie.

Lala and Element 88 will strut their stuff onstage at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre on the campus of Monmouth University tomorrow, June 7 at 8:00 with Stringbean Sorenson opening. It is the second annual concert of the series known as “The Mississippi Delta Meets The Jersey Shore,” a joint venture of The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music (BSACAM), The Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation (JSJBF), The Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area and “Visit Clarksdale.”
