Up-Close with Myzz-London
She stole the show in The Jersey Sound documentary. What with such Garden State luminaries from The Smithereens, Tommy James & The Shondells, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, The Bongos, Kool & The Gang, Skid Row, Joey Dee & The Starliters, Trixter, Williams Honor, The Rascals, Return To Forever, Dramarama, Overkill, Twisted Sister, The Catholic Girls, TT Quick and many others, rapper Myzz-London, who was nine years old when she filmed her segment, was the talk of the town in Asbury Park when we had our first public screening at The House of Independents on Cookman Avenue. (She was eight when she recorded “Ice Cream,” the song she performs in the film.) As she says today, “That’s still my most favorite song that I’ve recorded. All the kids in my school found out I’m a music artist and they absolutely love ```Ice Cream.’”
Now she’s a teenager and watch out! She’ll be performing live November 1 in New York City at The Green Room 42 in the heart of the Broadway district, which has hosted the likes of Josh Groban, Tina Fey, Sara Bareilles and almost 5,000 others in its eight years of existence. It’s a special 1:00 p.m. “Future of Hip-Hop” show with fellow rappers Julia Roome and Keyshaun. Myzz-London will no doubt be performing selections from her Built Different EP including fan favorites such as “Downgrade” and “Do You Love Me.” In our doc, when asked who her favorite rapper was, she coquettishly answered “me” before adding Nicki Minaj. Ask her today and she’ll say Cardi B, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Bryson Tiller. (Cardi B’s Am I The Drama has been filling her ear of late.)
She’s been in the studio recording songs like “Miss Me With That” and “Black Barbie.” “I’m getting more into writing my own music now,” she says, “and those two songs are the result so far. They should be out in a few months.” When asked how she could possibly do school, a recording career, writing her own material, and performing live, all while trying to live a normal life as a Jersey Girl from Bergen County, she admits, “It’s challenging. Balancing school and extra-curricular activities such as cheerleading, acting and modeling can be tough but my mom makes my schedule so it’s not so hard on me all the time.”
