The Upsides
“New Jersey In The ’90s”

They live in New York City now, but brothers Matt and Dan Fullam—with friends Hart Mechlin, Pat Freeman and Matt DaSilva—were raised in Morris County. This is off their In The Maze album, due October 16 on Dream Wolf Records.

Bettye LaVette
“Souvenirs”

On September 4, at The Freight in Berkeley, California, our very own Essex County legend Bettye LaVette took a song from arguably America’s greatest songwriter, John Prine [1946–2020], and—with Etienne Stadwijk—wrung every last possible drop of soulful emotion out of it. No singer on the planet can make time itself stand still like she does when she sings. She turns this one inside-out, almost to the point of it being unrecognizable.

Bruce Springsteen
“Dancing In The Dark”

This rejected 1984 video sat in somebody’s file cabinet for more than four decades. It was directed by Jeff Stein (who did 1979’s The Kids Are Alright Who doc). Former Columbia Records President Al Teller said no way and a subsequent vid—the one we all know (directed by Brian De Palma)—was shot using actress Courteney Cox.

Mike Greenblatt

MIKE GREENBLATT has been writing for Goldmine magazine and New Jersey's Aquarian Weekly for more than 35 years. His writing subjects fill the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He's interviewed Joe Cocker, Graham Nash, David Crosby, Carlos Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash, and members of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. He was 18 when he attended Woodstock in 1969.

In addition to writing about music, Greenblatt has worked on publicity campaigns for The Animals, Pat Benatar, Johnny Winter, Tommy James and Richard Branson, among others. He is currently the editor of The Jersey Sound.
