Brazilian superstar singer-songwriter and five-time Latin Grammy winner Marisa Monte will bring her spectacular Portas show downtown Newark as part of the North To Shore Festival. Her lilting bossa-nova, sensual samba and overall oeuvre is the reason such artists as David Byrne, Philip Glass and Caetano Veloso have sought her out for collaborations. The elaborate production of this Portas event—complete with projections, choreography and multiple costume changes—is Broadway-worthy.
In describing the genesis of Portas (“Doors”), written during the pandemic, Monte says, “I wanted to offer something that could heal and help people to cross this moment, to not be that depressed and sad. Doors are very symbolic elements…opportunities…changes…transformations, so I wanted to offer a sense of passage.”
The band on this tour consists of two guitars, drums, percolating percussion and a horn section of trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, flute and sax.
