Meet… VESPID
The utter insanity that goes on during shows by Camden County’s Vespid is not for the faint-of-heart. The mosh pit that erupts is virulent, violent, action-packed, crazy and physical. The band’s sound is, indeed, a soundtrack for fighting. So we asked them about it.
“We feel like what we do best as a band is getting into small rooms with a bunch of kids, maybe who don’t even know anything about hardcore, and watching them get really into the music and the message because we try to meet them where we’re at. We also feel like we have a sound that is familiar to kids who might only really listen to legacy metal bands or punk rock, but getting to put kids into bands like Leeway, Blood for Blood, and TUI is half of the fun of touring for us.”
Hatched in 2021 when frontman Joe Greble and drummer Sean Lenny—tired of trying to form thrash and punk bands in high school—settled on a concoction of hardcore, metalcore and death metal. When bassist Bayan Orishak joined in 2022, they found their groove, and with various friends taking turns playing guitar, they released their Eaten Alive debut and got themselves to open for Madball and Murphy’s Law. Two of those guitarists—RJ Hill and Brandan Goldmacher—stuck around and by 2023, they knew they had their permanent lineup.
The self-produced “Dead To Me” and “Dropout” singles expanded their sonic palette to the point where audiences up and down the East Coast banged heads and came up smiling. Opening for Suicidal Tendencies certainly didn’t hurt. Ultimately, it may look like total and complete chaos, but a lot of hard work went into these grooves.
