Two New Funky Singles From Mother Hubbard
“Captain Of The Ceiling” and “Crack The Code” are the two new funky singles from Mother Hubbard via Gold’n Retriever Entertainment. The band met while attending William Paterson University in Wayne. The sound? Hard to describe, but suffice it to say that if the Red Hot Chili Peppers impregnated Steely Dan, the baby might sound like this.
When asked about “Captain Of The Ceiling,” Singer-Guitarist Nick Nella says, “it has a certain playfulness to it, but the lyrics mean no matter how high you get, there will always be a ceiling and you’ll have to come down.”
“Crack The Code,” on the other hand, has no such profundity. It’s more a tribute of sorts to fellow Jersey Boy Donald Fagen (Passaic) whose Steely Dan band was named after a dildo in the 1959 beat novel Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. “We’ve always been huge fans,” Nella admits. “We admire the way the Dan constructs pop songs pulling from an array of genres and musical influences. I wrote the main horn line with Steely in mind, and it only felt right to include a very jazz-inspired extended guitar solo at the end.”
But what does it mean?

“It reflects on feelings of indecisiveness, avoidance and fear.”
Just like all good funk.
