We’ve got some issue for you this month! Hollywood actress Jayne Mansfield was born in 1933 Pennsylvania, raised in Phillipsburg, Warren County, played the role of the ditzy dumb blonde throughout her career, but nothing could be further from the truth. She died at 34 in a car crash and even in death pioneered a highway safety feature still used today. Then there’s Newark poet Allen Ginsberg—The High Priest of The Beat Generation—whose centennial sparked a re-release of his most famous poem, “Howl.”

This issue’s “Visual Sound” features videos from Newark soul singer Raheem DeVaughn, Skid Row bassist Rachel Bolan (born in Point Pleasant 62 years ago), Hoboken’s Bob Bert (the stalwart punk-rock drummer of Sonic Youth and Pussy Galore), the duo known as Tiny Cities (split between Middlesex and Morris Counties) and a classic from salsa icon Eddie Palmiere who passed away just last year at his Hackensack home.

Check out our “Hot 100” with 100 songs by 100 artists; the calendar of 60 New Jersey concerts in the next 60 days; the Event section where we take a closer look at just who’s comin’ to our great state, and, of course, “The Lowdown,” a different story every weekday. Plus, let us please introduce you to Surfing For Daisy, an Asbury Park sextet whose “Hot Blood” we just can’t stop listening to.
